Tools to Get Started Information Guidance and Resources for IUJ students ON campus.

Companies and recruiters,
please contact us, or visit this site for services we provide.

Before you can find a job or internship, you need to prepare several important tools.

Tool 1: Knowing Yourself and Where you Fit
First, find out who you are and what your goals are by using paper versions (ask CC&S), or on-line versions of
Self Assessment Tests. Find out what kind of jobs and industries suit you based on your skills, interests, experience. This means self understanding and Career Exploration. Attend workshops, borrow the tape or see the CC&S staff for help. For a comprehensive look at your interests, abilities and suitable careers, ask CC&S about CareerLeader.com access for IUJ students.

Tool 2: Your Resume and Rirekisho
Prepare a
strong resume to be used as a base. This should include detailed information on everything you have ever done. THEN modify this base to highlight different skills that relate to your job/internship objective. The final product should be one page and specifically edited for each company or job/internship you approach.

Tool 3: Cover Letter
Prepare several versions of a
cover letter. Each job application will require a very different cover letter, but you can research these NOW, and prepare a few sample cover letters for yourself in the field and type of work that interests you.

Tool 4: Networking
You will also need to
build your network. The earlier you start (first term, first year is recommended, if not BEFORE you come to campus) the easier it will be.

Tool 5: Interviewing skills, preparation and practice
You are going to get an interview, really! So be prepared. The CC&S library has several good books to give guidance, attend the workshops in October offered by CC&S, take a Mock Interview in November, and check out this great information from
WetFeet press: General interview techniques and preparation drills, information on the Case Method (also fee free to borrow the Workshop tape from CC&S) of interviewing and practice cases, and more!  Need to take a telephone interview?  Here is some advice. Want to read feedback given by several companies on past IUJer interviews?  Ask CC&S for a copy, or see the handout files.

Get an offer! Good for you. Please come tell CC&S the good news, then use these resources to help you relocate to Tokyo: salary negotiations, housing information, insurance and hankos, etc.
