Email List Policy

The MLIC computing staff have created several mailing lists, which re-distribute e-mail to various groups of campus users. This is intended to provide an efficient avenue of communication from the administration to the student body or faculty. They are meant for dissemination of official administrative announcements only.

In order that they continue to serve this purpose, it has been decided that the individuals authorized to send mail to these lists will be limited. We realize that other groups on campus may have needs to send mail to various groups of students and staff. However, if we use the above mentioned lists for too many purposes, their effectiveness as an official communications medium will be severely diminished.

For this purpose, we have made it possible to set up your own lists for special purposes. If you have a genuine need for a group mailing list, please contact us. We can assist you in setting up various lists for special purposes. All individuals and groups are entitled to set up special-purpose mailing lists, as long as these guidelines are followed:

  1. The MLIC will not establish lists containing all campus users under any circumstances. You may publicize (by other means) such a list and invite all campus users to join, at their discretion.
  2. All lists created should allow members to leave, if they so wish. In addition, each message should contain a brief 'footer' file explaining how to do this.
  3. Every list should have at least one individual who is responsible for operation of the list. This is the ' list owner': this person will control day-to-day operation of the list, including subscription requests and providing help and advise to members.
  4. The MLIC will not monitor or control the topics discussed on such lists. Management of the discussions, as well as control of any abusers, is the sole responsibility of the ' list owner'.
  5. IUJ, through the MLIC, provides this service to campus users as a method of open and free discussion. However, in the event of complaints from users, or if the MLIC judges the operation of the list to be damaging to IUJ or in any way illegal, we reserve the right to take appropriate action.
